About Iceland

Everyone should experience at least once, the breathtaking beauty of Iceland’s frozen landscape, strewn with vast glaciers, gushing  hot springs, waterfalls and  lava fields.  Iceland’s expansive wilderness offers freedom in many forms; as the perfect place to relax and unwind, and as the most exhilarating and fun playground in the world. If you are seeking a holiday to revive or release your spirits, Iceland is the destination for you.
Iceland is a country of extreme and striking contrasts.   Geographically and environmentally it is unique; an arctic oasis trimmed with thick vegetation along the coastline.  Iceland is a fairly large country, about the same size as England and Wales together, but 80% of it is uninhabitable.  Most of the population lives in the southwest of the country; of Iceland’s 300,000 inhabitants, two thirds live in and around Reykjavik.

Iceland’s main towns by region are:
South- Reykjavik, West- Ísafjörður, North- Akureyrir, East- Egilstaðir

No doubt due to its rugged landscape, Iceland was the last country in Europe to be settled. In the 9th and 10th centuries, Norseman arrived from Norway, Scandinavia, and from the Norse settlements in the British Isles. This reflects in Icelandic modern day culture which is predominantly Scandanavian with a Celtic element.
Icelanders are among the hardest working people in Europe, and they like to play just as hard.  Reykjavik is particularly well known for its party atmosphere, and has many places at which to enjoy fine food and entertainment.
Iceland is also well known for its geothermal activity, which provides a continuous stream of geothermal water, hot and rich in minerals to open-air pools, baths and spas.  Other popular leisure activities Iceland offers include river rafting, ice climbing, whale watching, and touring on snowmobile or by super-jeep.
The climate in Iceland is cool is summer and fairly mild winter; winters are similar to those in New York.  Warmed by the Gulf Stream and south-westerly winds, Iceland has an average winter temperature of 31°F (-5°C) and a summer temperature of 52°F (11°C).
